Maidstone United have moved to ease their current goalkeeping crisis by signing former Gillingham keeper Kelvin Jack.

The 35 year old keeper has been brought in by Stones manager Jay Saunders with number one choice Charlie Mitten picking up a hip injury in Wednesday night’s 4-2 win over Godalming Town.

Jack played two pre-season games for the Stones and and has trained with them on half a dozen occasions too, but has played just the one competitive game for AFC Hornchurch this season.

Last season he played for both Darlington and Kettering Town in the Conference.

Gillingham fans will remember Jack for failing to impress in his time at Priestfield, making just eleven starts in two injury plagued seasons between July 2006 and May 2008.

The Trinidad and Tobago keeper went on to sign for Southend United after his spell with The Gills, but failed to play a game for the Essex side and in seven and a half years in British football he has played just 42 competitive appearances.

Despite this, Maidstone manager Jay Saunders was delighted to get such an experienced keeper in at such short notice telling www.maidstoneunited.co.uk :

“There aren’t too many keepers that are available at the moment and we had a bit of luck signing Kelvin. By coincidence he is a close neighbour of our assistant manager Alan Pouton and Kelvin was able to agree to sign for us very quickly indeed.

“He’s helped us out massively here and I’d like to thank the big man immensely for that.”

Jack will make his Stones debut when they entertain Ramsgate in the Ryman League Division One South on Saturday afternoon.
